The Department was organized in mid-1964 based about the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Specialized Education of the RSFSR No. 149 dated November 12, 1964. The initial name of the department is “Theoretical Foundations of Radio Engineering”.
In 1966, the department was renamed the "Radio-technical systems", with the same period started training for the country's radio and electronic equipment.
At the origins of the creation of the department 7 teachers worked - energetic and purposeful enthusiasts: M.B.Sverdlik, M.N.Sumik, I.N. Yerimicha, V.K.Orzhehovsky, Yu.D.Krisilov, A.Yu.Kovalchuk, V.S.Yanina.
The founder of the department and its leader until 1989 was the Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Sverdlik Meshulim Beniyaminovich. From 1989 to 2014, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Baranov Porfiry Efimovich - a graduate of the department, headed the department. Since 2014, Associate Professor, Candidate of Technical Sciences, Tsevukh Igor Vasilyevich head the department.

At the stage of formation, the main efforts of the department's staff were aimed at improving the educational process: developing curricula and programs, developing lecture material, setting up a laboratory base, organizing and conducting production and pre-diploma practices, methodological support of course and diploma projects.
With the development of the department, the introduction of new curricula and disciplines the teaching staff of the department expanded and updated mainly due to its graduates.
Over the years, a scientific school was created at the department that dealt with the problems of developing noise immunity systems in radiolocation, radio navigation, radio control and practical implementation of communication channel and telemechanics apparatus for power lines from 35 to 750 kW.
The big contribution to the decision of the named problems was brought by Dr. Sc. prof. Abramovich Yu.I., Dr. of Sc. prof. Baranov P.E., Dr. of Sc. prof. Koshevoi V.M., Dr. of Sc. prof. Sverdlik M.B., Dr. of Sc. prof. Mazurkov M.I., Ph.D., Assoc. Dolgochub V.T., Ph.D., Assoc. Gontarenko V.P., Ph.D. Assoc. Averochkin V.A., Ph.D. Assoc. Tsevuh I.V., Ph.D. Assoc. Kononov A.A., Ph.D. Assoc. Lavrinenko V.P., Ph.D. Assoc. Medvedik A.D., Ph.D. Assoc. Meleshkevich A.N. and etc.
Published more than 1200 scientific articles, received more than 110 copyright certificates for inventions and patents, published a number of monographs and textbooks. More than 50 radio engineering devices and systems for various purposes have been introduced and mass-produced.
Over the past years, the department has trained more than 3,500 specialists with higher technical education, 38 candidate and 4 doctoral dissertations have been defended.
