In 1993, the Department of System Software was founded at Odesa National Polytechnic University. The task of the department was the training IT specialists in the development of software for different automated systems used in scientific, industrial, and financial institutions. The department became one of the first ones of such a profile in Ukraine. The initial teaching staff consisted of experienced specialists in programming, system and application software, intelligent information processing systems, etc.

In 1996, the first graduation of specialists in specialty 7.080403, "Software for automated systems," took place.

Since 2007, following the decision of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the department, one of the first in the country, implemented the bachelor’s curriculum 6.050103 – Software engineering. Since 2011, it has also provided the specialist’s and master’s curricula 8(7).05010301 – Systems software and 8(7).05010302 - Software engineering.

Since 2010, following the Cooperation Agreement with Linnaeus University (Sweden), the department has started a master's program with a double degree.

Since 2016, the department has implemented bachelor’s and master’s curricula 121 - Software engineering. Their programs fully meet the requirements of higher education standards and the National Qualifications Framework.

In 2021, the department was renamed to the Department of Software Engineering because the training programs and scientific research of the employees are focused on this area of information technology.

During its existence, the department has trained over 1,500 highly qualified IT specialists, 21 candidates, and three doctors of technical sciences.
